Compost Bin and Rain Barrel Sale

This Saturday (April 24th), compost bins and rain barrels will be on sale for $50.00 each at the Tallahassee Mall parking lot. The sale runs from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm, but you might want to get there early as the line tends to get long.

BEFORE THE DIGGING, THEY WILL BE GIVING A BASIC WORKSHOP

Helena Sadvary, John Maiers, and Ed Schroeder present various aspects of starting a spring garden for the first time gardener. Topics include location, types of gardening, irrigation, compost, soil, what to plant when, seeds vs seedlings, advantages, opportunities to get involved, and much more! They will be available during and after the presentation to answer questions. All three presenters are Master Gardeners with a special interest in vegetable and herb gardening.

Build A Birdhouse with your Sweetheart

Wisteria Circle is hands-down the coolest in the Garden Club. Last night’s “Build A Birdhouse with your Sweetheart” was one of our best meetings ever. It was great to meet everyone’s significant others and sons. I took photos with my phone, so they’re a bit grainy, but it sure shows how much fun us Wisteria girls know how to have.

Thanks a bunch to our hosts Glenda and Paul Erickson. We’re also eternally grateful to Leisa Pichard and Keith McCraw for getting all the materials ready for the build.

Birdhouse Prep

Thanks to everyone who RSVP’d for the special Valentine’s Day program this coming Tuesday at Glenda’s house. Look for directions via email in the next few days.

We have 10 couples coming to assemble these lovely, cypress bird houses. It will be a fun program (bring a hammer!), and a great opportunity to catch up with everyone. Special thanks in advance to Keith McCraw (Keith’s Cabinets), who procured all the materials, designed the birdhouse, prepped the wood (and let me use the drill press!) for this special program.

Gardening Friends of the Big Bend is pleased to announce our third Plantaholic Preview Party. This evening fund-raiser includes party food and drinks with a crowd of plant enthusiasts bidding on silent and live auction items. Pre-priced plants are also for sale. Auction and sale items include rare, unique, bodacious and perhaps even bizarre plants and accessories suitable for our area. This event is a one-of-a-kind evening with happy gardeners helping the NFREC with its research and educational missions. Herman Holley and Louise Divine are stewards of the land and creators of community. Since 1999 at Turkey Hill Farm, their 89-acre spread located half-way between Tallahassee and Monticello, they plant, nurture, harvest and share Certified Naturally Grown vegetables and fruits for area farmers’ markets and members of Turkey Hill’s small CSA.

Turkey Hill serves as a nexus of the area’s green community, supporting and sustaining a network of small farmers, and educating those hungry to learn how to work and replenish the soil to bring forth good, healthy food. Please join us as Herman and Louis provide tips and techniques for growing vegetables naturally and share the joy they find in farming.

Succulents

Looking for something to do with that old bonsai pot–the one with the dead bonsai plant in it? Well, I have the answer: succulents. These hardy little plants come in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes. They are just adorable. The major hardware stores now typically devote an entire section of their gardening department to them. Succulents typically like shallower pots, as their roots don’t grow very deep. A large shallow pot gives you the opportunity to create an entire succulent garden. Succulents typically need indirect light, and can endure periods of drought.

Another benefit–succulents are fairly inexpensive. On a recent trip to Lowe’s, I went a little berserk and filled a whole flat with succulents. It only set me back about 20.00 and I was able to create about 5 succulent garden dishes. Another benefit is easy propagation: Just lay a petal on top of soil, and it should root and form a new plant.
